Today was a busy day.
Firstly, i had to travel all the way to mountbatten road which is near kallang, to the SADeaf School where we learnt sign language from our instructor, Jimmy Wong who has profound hearing loss, meaning he can hear extremely loud noises sometimes. His english name has a interesting history behind it. Apparently, when he was young, his eyebrows arched upwards and when he gradually grew older, his eyebrows began growing downwards instead. As the sign language for "Jimmy" involves moving the hand upward first and then moving it downwards, it sort of told the story of jimmy's arching eyebrows.
We were taught the basics of sign language, such as A to Z and basic conversational sign language such as expressing your hunger, thirst or pleasantries. the whole thing took a little over an hour. i also learnt quite a lot about deaf people, such as the degree of hearing loss and under which criteria do people learn sign language or opt to use audio-visual means to aid their communication skills due to their lack of hearing ability. Two mosquitoes, however, kept me distracted as i tracked them flying around the room. (just hope not too many of my friends donated blood to them)
At first, i was rather stunned to find pianos and guitars in a deaf school when i initially helped them to move over to their current location. however, after i attended this course, i realised that even deaf people could play music as some may only be suffering from mild hearing loss and hence can still learn to play music instruments, dance or sing, albeit a lot more harder than a normal person. a living example is my instructor, who can't hear us speak, but is able to attend rock concerts as he can still hear loud sounds.
After we finished the course, we went to our lecturer's house to celebrate the new year. A dinner of KFC and Pizza Hut followed with all kinds of food from these 2 restaurants. For drinks, i had both green tea and fizzy drinks. we then went to mr ho's house and he showed us his spick and spank room, which rather impressed me as it was simple and elegant in it's design. the contents of the cupboard are another story though :p
We also had a bit of wine for us boys. i must say that i nearly approached my limit before alcoholic effects took over. maybe another 6 mouthful and i would be muttering rubbish like a certain someone i knew...
To wrap up the night's event we gambled a little bit, though a little bit may be an understatement for mr ho. i can't bear to think how much he lost to us even though statistically saying, he should have a high chance of winning. i also learnt to play "in between" tonight. i won around maybe 10 dollars in blackjack but i think i lost around 3 dollars to in between. But hey, this is rather good for a zodiac sign that is supposedly to have quite a lot of bad luck this year!
Alright that was quite a lot for 1 day... half a day to be exact. Enough storytelling.
Time to sleep.
Till next time
